What Finger Does a Promise Ring Go on?
Whether a true proposal is years away or you’re expecting one any day now, wearing a promise ring can be a visible representation of your commitment to your partner. But do you wear the promise ring on the same finger as you’d wear engagement or wedding rings?
Wear a Promise Ring on Your Ring Finger
Like an engagement or wedding ring, a promise ring goes on your ring finger. However, unlike the other two rings, your promise ring can be worn on your left or right hand.
Some people wear their promise ring on the left hand until an engagement comes, then switch it to the right hand. Others simply stop wearing the promise ring once they get engaged. And still other people wear the promise ring on their right hand the whole time so there’s no need to switch once they get engaged.
So, as long as your promise ring is on your ring finger, you can choose which hand you want to wear it on.
What Is the History of Promise Rings?
Promise rings date back to the Roman era, when couples were required to wait a certain amount of time before marrying. During this waiting period, they gave rings as a sign of their commitment to one another.
In the 14th century, the “posy ring” (also called a “posey” or “poesy” ring) became popular as a symbol of affection between couples. This ring was a band engraved with a short poetic phrase, often in Latin or French. Later, in the 19th century, acrostic rings spelled out words such as “regard” and “dearest” in gemstones.
The promise ring as a precursor to an engagement ring is more of a modern idea. As couples date for longer periods of time, people have increasingly begun to give promise rings as a sort of guarantee—or promise—that the relationship is heading to marriage.
Is a Promise Ring Required?
No. Promise rings, like even engagement rings and wedding rings, are not required as part of a committed relationship.
If you are in a long-term relationship, it’s best to talk with your partner about each of your expectations for symbols such as promise and engagement rings so there are no unspoken desires that cause hurt feelings.
