How to Tell if Your Jewelry Is Real: Simple Tips for At-Home Testing

Whether you inherited a family heirloom, discovered an old piece tucked away in a jewelry box, or purchased jewelry years ago, it’s natural to wonder if it’s the real thing. While the only way to know for certain is through professional testing, there are a few simple checks you can do at home to get a better idea of what you have.

Look for Hallmarks and Stamps

One of the easiest places to start is by checking for a hallmark or purity stamp. Gold jewelry is often marked with numbers such as 10K, 14K, 18K, or 24K. Silver may be stamped “925,” indicating sterling silver, while platinum pieces are often marked “PLAT” or “950.”

Keep in mind that some older or custom-made pieces may not have visible markings, and counterfeit jewelry can also feature fake stamps. Hallmarks are helpful, but they should never be the only factor you rely on.

Pay Attention to Color and Wear

Take a close look at the jewelry under good lighting. Genuine gold generally maintains a consistent color throughout the piece. If you notice discoloration, fading, or another metal showing through in areas of frequent wear, it may simply be gold-plated rather than solid gold.

The same principle applies to silver. Tarnish on sterling silver is normal and can often be polished away, but flaking or peeling may indicate a plated item.

Try the Magnet Test

Gold, silver, and platinum are not magnetic. Using a strong household magnet, gently see if your jewelry is attracted to it. If it sticks firmly, the piece likely contains significant amounts of other metals.

This test isn’t foolproof, however. Some counterfeit pieces use non-magnetic metals, while certain clasps or small components on genuine jewelry may contain magnetic materials.

Check the Weight

Precious metals are typically denser than inexpensive alloys. If you have a similar piece that you know is genuine, compare the weight. Real gold and platinum often feel surprisingly heavy for their size. While weight alone won’t confirm authenticity, it can provide another useful clue.

When in Doubt, Trust a Professional

Home tests can be helpful, but they have their limits. Acid testing, electronic metal analyzers, and gemstone testing equipment provide much more accurate results and should be performed by experienced professionals. Professional evaluation is especially important before selling, insuring, or repairing valuable jewelry.
